How to Play Pokebonk: First Run Walkthrough

Start your first Pokebonk run step by step: guest entry, partner choice, region, mode, difficulty, the pause screen and your first level-up card.

Quick answer

Open pokebonk.com, choose the Guest option, pick Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle, then select a region, mode and difficulty. Press Esc at any time to read your moves, items and stats.

Pokebonk is a free, non-commercial fan game that runs in the browser. You pick one partner, drop into a 3D map, and survive waves of wild Pokémon while your moves fire automatically. The decisions that matter are where you stand and which upgrade cards you take.

This walkthrough covers the menu sequence, the first minute of a run, and the two screens you will use most: the pause panel and the level-up offer. It was checked against Beta v0.7.3 on 19 October 2026.

What you are opening

The game is published at pokebonk.com by Charcher. There is no download, no installer and no store listing. It is an unofficial fan project, not a Nintendo or The Pokémon Company product.

You need a browser with WebGL enabled. Desktop is the most comfortable way to learn the controls, but the game also runs on phones in landscape with on-screen buttons.

Step 1: open the official site

Go to pokebonk.com. The page loads a 3D scene and a menu. If the scene stays black, jump to the browser troubleshooting guide before changing anything else.

Use the language selector if you want the interface in English, Spanish or another supported language. The game's own English URL is pokebonk.com/?lang=en.

Step 2: choose Guest or an account

A new session offers a Guest entry. Guest play is the fastest way to see the game, and progress is stored in the browser.

Create an account when you care about:

  • a trainer profile that is not tied to one browser
  • leaderboards and run history
  • clans and in-game mail
  • progress that survives clearing site data

You do not need an account to finish this walkthrough.

Step 3: pick a partner

A new Guest chooses one of three partners: Bulbasaur, Charmander or Squirtle. The other two do not unlock immediately. The selection screen explains that each partner has its own challenge and can be captured later.

Read the passive on each card before you choose:

  • Bulbasaur — healer. Synthesis adds regeneration and bonus healing, with small heals when Grass attacks connect.
  • Charmander — Fire damage. Sea of Flames boosts Fire moves and adds a damage bonus at low HP.
  • Squirtle — defender. Torrent Shell adds armor and a shield, with the same low-HP damage condition.

The starter comparison covers starting moves, base stats and which mechanic each partner teaches.

Step 4: choose region, mode and difficulty

Open Play and pick a League member, then confirm:

ChoiceWhat it changes
RegionThe map, enemy pool and visuals
ModeClassic (zones and guardians) or Survival (endless)
DifficultyEnemy pressure; the game lists Normal, Hard and Nightmare

For a first run, keep the defaults: one region, Classic, Normal. Changing three variables at once makes it hard to tell what caused a death.

The mode comparison explains the difference between Classic and Survival.

Step 5: survive the first minute

Your starting move attacks on its own. With the default Automatic aiming, it targets the nearest enemy. Your job is movement: keep space around the partner, circle rather than retreat in a straight line, and avoid walking into a fresh wave.

Three habits carry the opening:

  1. Move before you need to. Standing still to "finish" an enemy is how most first runs end.
  2. Read the ground. Telegraphs and hazards matter more than the health bar of a single enemy.
  3. Collect experience. The run only changes when you level up, and levels come from defeated enemies.

The pause screen is your map of the run

Press Esc at any time. The pause panel shows health, experience, learned moves, items and stats in one place.

Use it to answer three questions:

  • Which move is actually firing?
  • Did the last card change a stat or add an attack?
  • How much health am I really missing?

A pause is free. Reading the panel after every second level-up is the fastest way to learn the game's vocabulary.

Your first level-up

Reaching level 2 opens an offer of three cards. They come from three families:

  • a new move, which fills an empty move slot
  • an upgrade to a move you already own
  • a vitamin, a one-time stat bonus

Read the card text, not just the icon. A move upgrade only helps if you own that move; a vitamin is a permanent change for the run. The level-up guide explains refresh, skip and banish.

What we checked and what we did not

Checked: the public entry flow, the three partner cards, the region and mode menus, desktop key bindings in the pause help, and the shape of a level-up offer.

Not checked: long-run balance, every difficulty, mobile hardware, account recovery, or whether a specific old build's card pool still matches the current one. Balance changes between builds, and the game is still in Beta.

If a screen does not match this guide, check the version under the logo and read the update log before assuming the guide is wrong.
