Pokebonk Shiny Hunting: Odds, Routes & Tracking

What the Pokebonk data actually exposes about shiny partners, how the shiny flag works in a run, and a simple tracker for the 151 Kanto species.

Quick answer

The client tracks a shiny flag per species, but the drop rate is not published in the data files we read. Treat community odds as reports, not confirmed values, and record your own encounters.

Shiny hunting is one of the few long-term goals in Pokebonk that is not tied to a season. It is also the goal with the least reliable public information, so this page separates what the data shows from what players report.

Checked against Beta v0.7.3 client data.

What the data actually exposes

The client tracks a shiny flag per species. Sprites, names, types and stats are identical; the shiny state is a cosmetic variant.

What the public data files do not contain:

  • a published shiny rate
  • a pity or guaranteed-encounter counter
  • a list of species that cannot be shiny
  • a separate shiny capture formula

If a guide quotes a precise rate, ask which source it came from. We have not found one in the files this site reads, so we do not publish a number.

How shiny encounters work in practice

A shiny is a normal encounter with a cosmetic flag. That has three consequences:

  1. You can miss it. The difference is visual. In a crowded wave, a shiny can die before you notice it.
  2. It can appear on an Alpha. Alpha status and shiny status are separate flags and can overlap.
  3. Capture is still a capture. The throw uses the same chance calculation as any other member of that species.

The practical skill is recognising the palette difference fast enough to stop attacking.

A route that respects your time

You cannot force a shiny without a known rate, so build a route you enjoy:

  1. Pick a region you can clear comfortably. A shiny you never see because you died at zone one is not a strategy.
  2. Use a build with controlled damage. Huge area attacks kill shinies by accident.
  3. Keep the capture prompt in mind. Weaken, do not overkill.
  4. Record encounters. A simple count tells you more than a vague feeling about luck.

If a run is not fun, stop. The expected value of a cosmetic hunt is not worth forcing a bad build.

Tracking the 151

This site includes a shiny tracker that stores your marks in the browser. It records two states per species: caught and shiny. Progress is local; nothing is uploaded.

Use it to answer:

  • Which Kanto species have I actually caught?
  • Which shinies have I found?
  • What is still missing?

Export the JSON before clearing site data if you care about the record.

Common claims we do not repeat

ClaimWhy we do not publish it
"1 in 4096"No shiny rate appears in the data we read. It may be true; it is not sourced here.
"Shiny charm multiplies odds"No such item appears in the Kanto item data.
"Shinies have better stats"The data shows the same stats; the flag is cosmetic.
"Chain encounters for a guarantee"No chain or pity counter is exposed in the client data.

None of this means those systems cannot exist. It means we cannot confirm them from the current build.

A note on screenshots

A shiny screenshot is evidence of one encounter. It is not evidence of a rate. If you are collecting proof for a community count, record the species, the region, the mode and the approximate number of encounters alongside the image.

Sources and scope

Shiny behaviour described here comes from the client's per-species flag and the absence of a rate in the public data files. We have not run a statistically useful number of encounters, and we do not present community reports as measured odds.
